Memorial Garden
In 2002, Grace United Methodist Church built a living Memorial Garden on the east side of our property to serve as a place for internments of ashes as well as prayer and quiet contemplation. The garden features pathways, patios, benches, natural rock outcroppings and a five foot red granite cross. Anyone with a connection to Grace UMC or Houghton, Michigan, is welcome to utilize this space as an alternate to traditional cemetery burial. No markers or artificial flowers of any kind are placed in the garden, as it is a living memorial. The names of the deceased are engraved on a bronze leaf sculpture just inside the east door of the church, and formal records are kept a fire-proof cabinet inside the church. Landscaping and maintenance are taken care of by a volunteer team at the church. A signed agreement and a burial fee are required, and arrangements must be made through the church office and pastor. See our garden policy for more information.
